Disaster Management in After Earthquake, Focusing on Sikkim, India

Sikkim is located at the high altitude seismic zone in northern part of India. Seismic vulnerability has damaged Sikkim state of India for several times yet www.ssdma.nic.in has clarified that #disastermanagement is the only policy to survive here with tremendous risks.

5 Months ago, there was mass earthquake in Benepa at Nepal. This earthquake has 7.3 magnitudes in seismograph by hitting several regions in Sikkim. On 19th November 1980, Sikkim was hit by a#earthquake with 6.0 magnitudes in Richter scale. Sikkim Government has taken steps to prevent mass loss of lives against earthquake on basis of national disaster management strategies. As #landsliding has been added to the #earthquake #disaster measuring policies now retrofitting technology has been initialized to plan for safer building constructions and zoning regulations. Sikkim Government has detected five specific issues of controversy against disaster management functional approaches.

An initially technological achievement has been factor to be taken under consideration. Sikkim state Government has notified areas for projecting engineers to check #geological stability before any constructions. State capacity building strategic initialization has been done suppose, development of airports has also been prevented from #South Sikkim to East Sikkim so that the whole project at least is stable up to ten years.

I was staying in #Sikkim earthquake of magnitude 5.1which I thought I should share with you. I also felt much that I better sharing experiences and my stunited.org friends felt need of awareness regarding earthquake disaster management in Sikkim and land sliding areas.

Sikkim Government Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling has organized mass meetings with the college students, army and city police forces so that in the time of sudden earthquake hit, people can help others to survive. Central and state government have worked jointly on development of IEC materials to be distributed to make homes safer.

Ministry of home affairs with support from #UNDP-India has implemented disaster risk management program for period 2010 – 2015. A multi-donor resource organization from US has confirmed $41 million for 17 multi hazardous states in India and 176 states worldwide. The DRM programme has initiates like strengthening disaster management capability for the states by e-district program.

I feel the method of disaster management clear that increasing knowledge base according to planning and artefacts can help people to survive. South district head quarter #Namchi district magistrate has organized training sessions for the officers on basis of knowledge material upon structural safety, private artefacts and retrofitting in July, 2015. According to www.stunited.org where I am an active member I shared my earthquake experiences and knowledge to increase knowledge level of thestudent community. As an educational network www.stunited.org has created a platform that can help students in colleges and universities to inform all types of information to each other on real time basis.

SIRD with collaboration with Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority has organized workshops to synchronize technical projections like #seismographic regional records with much equipment as bolt cutters, axe, crow bar, rechargeable lights, mattock, rope manila, hammer etc.

I hope that I have better focus upon all aspects of process regarding survival against earthquake disaster in any state of any country.
